The Soul Providers
The Soul Providers
The Bay Area’s most sought after multi-instrumentalist, Rich Armstrong, switches effortlessly between vocals, trumpet, percussion, and guitar. He has had a storied career, having played, toured, and recorded with Boz Scaggs, Tony! Toni! Toné!, Thomas Dolby, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, Lyrics Born, Jody Watley, and Train.

Rich started this band as a contributing teacher and member of the Waldorf of the Peninsula’s school community. Looking to get talented parents back into music, the band is called the SOUL PROVIDERS and explores the best in new and retro dance music.
The band was composed solely of parents at the school and grew to 15 pieces, but now is streamlined and has grown to include a few ‘ringers’- talented professionals that meet the needs of the band. They play a wide variety of dance music and have a great following due to the amazing set lists and sound of the band- a full rhythm section and a 4 piece horn section makes for a big sound. Some new additions to the set include the Weeknd, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, and Cake. From Pink to the Sex Pistols this band rocks with a wide variety of great dance music!

RICH ARMSTRONG BIO Vocals, trumpet, trombone, guitar, percussion, guitar

Born in Long Beach, California he has followed his roots and is an avid surfer as well as a driving force in the Bay Area music scene. From his tenure as a soloist with the Santa Clara Vanguard at age 16 to his current position as musical director and founder of elite Bay Area cover band the 415s, Rich Armstrong has always sought excellence.

He started his singing career winning a coveted lead role in a pop production called ‘Rock the House’ at Paramount’s Great America. Many of the singers and dancers from that production went on to successful careers in Broadway musicals, but Armstrong had touring in mind.

In 1997, he launched his touring career in a band lead by Michelle Shocked and toured for 15 years with her. Touring sometimes as a duo, he became a multi-instrumentalist, playing effected and looped trumpet/ flugel, congas, bongos, percussion, rhythm guitar, bass, and singing lead and background vocals. The highlight of this touring was performing with Bruce Springsteen, and being showcased by “The Boss” in an impromptu solo on stage at the NYC guitar festival. He went on to tour internationally with many others including Thomas Dolby, the Jazz Mafia, and Lyrics Born.

In 2001 recorded for Tony!Toni!Toné!’s live show and then in 2003 toured the U.S. with Joyce Cooling on trumpet, vocals and percussion as well as touring that same year and through 2004 with Boz Scaggs. (through the U.S. and Japan culminating in a live DVD and album entitled "Greatest Hits: Live!") At that point he landed the horn heavy job with Cold Blood and has done 2 albums with them. He also recorded a live album and national tour with eclectic synth pioneer Thomas Dolby, and most recently a televised holiday special and holiday album with the band- Train.

You’ll find him on recordings with Ireland’s Hot House Flowers , Joyce Cooling , Lyrics Born, Cold Blood, and Narada Michael Walden. He’s also sat in with the likes of Tower of Power, Ozomatli, Jody Watley, Spearhead, Los Mocosos, and toured stadiums with Josh Groban.
2018 finds him touring with Lydia Pense & Cold Blood and Tony!Toni!Toné while bandleading top SF cover band the 415s ( and the Soul Providers. He is also a regular contributor to the Jazz Mafia, a world famous SF Jazz/ Funk/ Hip Hop collective
